AAF-US started as a simple idea: Families helping families!
On September 7th, 2011, Billy and Tiffany Roberts spoke to a friend that lost everything in the Bastrop Complex Wildfires 2011. Thinking of what they could do to help, Tiffany suggested that they "adopt" their friends to help them get all necessary items. Billy and Tiffany could then support and help their friends track down all the rest of the items needed to repopulate their new housing. Later that night, Tiffany had an idea that if they could help one family, then maybe others who were like minded could help more families. So on September 7th, 2011, the Facebook group called "Bastrop Fire - Adopt A Family" was born.
Through the Facebook group we not only helped people with the essentials, but also helped them to find housing and household items immediately. Since the "Adopt A Family" program through our facebook group Bastrop Fire - Adopt A Family was so successful thanks to our volunteers and families willing to help other families in need, it was decided to expand and AAF-US a non profit corporation was created on September 21, 2011.
Since the organization's creation, ALL ABOUT FAMILIES (AAF-US) through the Adopt A Family program has helped over 350 families with it's network of "adopting" families, and provided items and/or resources to more than 700 additional families. AAF-US through the Volunteer Action Network program has organized the effort of thousands of volunteers to help with clean up and rebuilding projects.
Our organization has two active programs at present time; both specifically prioritize clients needing assistance in disaster relief efforts. The Adopt A Family (AAF) program provides case management in identifying unmet needs, client advocacy in securing resources for those needs and guidance for reaching recovery goals. The Volunteer Action Network (VAN) program provides outreach and awareness to the local community and beyond to secure volunteer assistance for a client needing help in clean up, rebuilding efforts and/or unmet needs that have been identified by case management. The VAN program also coordinates volunteers for community events to fundraise, gather material donations or for general celebration events to lift spirits and build morale in the families such as our Winter Holiday Extravaganza and many other events planned throughout the year.
